The National Register of Personal Trainers only accepts certain courses as being approved and valid. These include quite a variety of courses from various providers, but what is looked for in the first instance is something equivalent to the government’s NVQ levels. You can begin with a basic course and then specialize or take higher level courses later.

Such courses, as well as up to date information about exercise – also provide training in nutritional and weight control advice, etc. Also recommended are such things as training in cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Gaining such qualifications entitle you:-

To put your name on the National Register of Personal Trainers.

Will be qualified to work as a personal trainer, either in an established gymnasium setting, or in your own Personal Training set up.

To run weight management classes, providing your clients with nutritional advice and information according to their individual needs.

Previous experience isn’t necessary for those taking such training. You will soon be making the transition from theory to action. You will come to appreciate the holistic approach – seeing your clients as complete people who need to fit in exercise into a busy life style. You will gain the knowledge required to prepare and individualise effective, safe programmes for a wide range of clients.

.What is needed on your part is commitment, motivation, energy and an ability and desire to deal with a variety of people and their individual and group needs, whatever their ultimate goals and present state of fitness

Training as a personal trainer means you must be able to focus your abilities and have a commitment to the idea of continued education.

It is a worthwhile career choice , both in terms of long term financial gain, but perhaps more importantly in terms of job satisfaction as one sees clients reaching their pre-determined objectives, whether this be just losing a few pounds or making life style changing and beneficial decisions.

As time goes on there will be opportunity for increasing your knowledge. On level 3 courses you can learn about such things as resistance training, strength training, postural analysis and cardio vascular training. You will gain instruction in matters such as behavioural psychology and evaluating lifestyles.

Your days and work style will be as varied as you want or can imagine. Hours too, may be varied. After all, the majority of your clients may well be working people who are not necessarily free from 9 to 5. Many personal trainers work with specialist groups and individuals in order to get round this. They might choose to work with young mothers or with older adults for instance.

Whichever way you plan to go, gaining personal training qualifications can be a start to a whole new lifestyle for you and your clients.
